Unplug the fountain and remove the pump before washing. Lift out the inner water container, take the unit apart and wash each piece, then put it back together and refill. Change the filter cartridge about every 60 days.
About 60 days, per Pet Life. One cartridge comes with the fountain, and replacement filters are sold separately in a 3-pack.
The pump shuts off automatically once the water drops below a set level, which Pet Life says helps keep the pump from burning out.
Unplug it and remove the pump first. Then lift out the inner container and take the unit apart to wash each piece.
